Why Every Woman Should Own an Evening Dress
You may feel that evening dresses are an irrelevance these days. After all, no-one dresses up any more and cocktail dresses are the order of the day for most formal occasions but I still feel that every woman should have an evening dress, just in case. Longer ago than I care to remember, I bought two evening dresses. They were both classic styles, both black and both velvet. I had no formal occasion looming but they were reduced in price and I told myself the purchase was justified as they would “come in handy”. For the first few years they languished on their hangers with only my parents’ ruby wedding and a fancy dress party to attend (I was Cruella De Ville!) but since I hit 40 they have been rather more in demand, with annual outings to my daughter’s school ball and a number of other formal occasions where only an evening dress would do.
Several of my friends who laughed at my formal wear shopping spree all those years ago, have had cause to be grateful for it, as they have both been lent out on a regular basis. One friend now has a job which requires her to attend formal events regularly and she has found my dresses very useful! Every woman should have an evening dress but when buying bear in mid that they must be a classic style which will not date, they must be simple so that their look can be changed easily with accessories and above all, you must love them – there’s nothing worse than going to nerve-wracking formal do’s and not having confidence in how you look. If you stick to these simple rules you can’t go wrong and if your friends of a similar size do the same, you should all have a good repertoire of formal wear for every occasion!
